Beowulf

We disscussed the difference between a good hero, and a good king. So what exactly is a hero? Someone who is strong? Someone who is smart? How about skilled, noble, and perfect Fabio-esk hair, or maybe just some big ol' brains? If some, or even any of these qualities describe what a hero is, then what is an epic EPIC hero? Are they more skilled, and even stronger? The point was brought up that an epic hero would be remembered forever. If what describes an epic hero is going down in the history books(or in this case a story that no one in there right mind can make any sense of without reading spark notes right after they read), then i believe Beowulf is and always will be the poster child for epic heros. He has courage, pride, skill, and even though we are unsure of his motives at times, he often seems selfless. Beowulf describes almost flawlessly what we descibe as our "perfect hero".

  1. Something we need to keep in mind as Beowulf being an epic hero, is that none of us knew about him before we started reading this story. To us our epic hero was possibly someone on a more personal level, but I agree that overall Beowulf does a pretty good job at fitting the profile.

  2. I think Beowulf is the poster child of epic heroes, not because he will be "remembered" per say, but because he is just that, an epic's hero. I think epic heroes are my of literature, and based off of real, more human-like people.

  3. Jerrin, you provide an interesting viewpoint. To which, I agree. Both that Beowulf is an EPIC hero and the Beowulf is very impossible to read without the internet.
